Promising Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder
Dialectical Behavior Therapy, often referred to as DBT, is an empirically
researched psychotherapeutic treatment developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan, Professor
of Psychology, University of Washington, for patients struggling with chronic
suicidality, intentional self-harm and borderline personality disorder (BPD).
This therapy, employing cognitive and behavioral principles, is rapidly becoming
a standard for treating borderline patients in both this country and abroad.
DBT consists of two primary components involving individual psychotherapy
once a week and a weekly skills training group. Additionally, patients are
offered telephone consultations with their individual therapist as needed.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe, chronic, disabling, and
potentially lethal psychiatric condition. People who suffer with this disorder
have extreme and long standing instability in their emotional lives, as well
as in their behavior and their self-image. This is a common disorder affecting
2% of the general population. The best evidence indicates that about 11% of
psychiatric outpatients and 19% of inpatients meet diagnostic criteria for
BPD.

of Borderline Personality Disorder
The Personality Disorders Institute offers the following information to the
general public to enhance awareness of the particulary challenging psychiatric
conditions known as borderline disorders or borderline personalities. Many
patients struggle not only with symptoms such as depression, anxieties, obsessions
or phobias for which help is typically sought, but also with control of emotion
and aggression, understanding of self, and tolerance of the treatment process.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness characterized
by pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image,
and behavior. This instability often disrupts family and work life, long-term
planning, and the individual's sense of self-identity. Originally thought
to be at the "borderline" of psychosis, people with BPD suffer from
a disorder of emotion regulation.
